Abraham Mintchine: Digital Catalogue Raisonné
This online publication presents an overview of Abraham Mintchine’s complete oeuvre. We have included descriptions and illustrations of more than 500 oil paintings, mixed media, sketches, drawings and some ceramics. The catalogue builds on the first catalogue raisonné authored in 1981 by Massimo Di Veroli and Giovanni Testori (Mondadori editions). This was followed by complements in 1989 (Ed. Galleria Lorenzelli) and in 2005 (Ed. Galerie Di Veroli). Our online catalogue includes artworks from these previous publications but also a significant number of paintings which were unknown to the authors.
Overall, this digital catalogue would not have been possible without the help and material provided by Massimo Di Veroli. Mr. Di Veroli has worked on authenticating and referencing Abraham Mintchine’s artwork for more than four decades. The material organized here is the result of long term professional activities, continuous interaction with collectors across the globe, consultation of archives, careful monitoring of auctioned artworks and regular requests for authentication.
Organizing the artwork
Due to the relatively short period over which the artist has produced this artwork, it is challenging to categorize it into specific periods. Rather than attempting a risky classificiation by timeline we have instead opted for a focus on subject categories. Of course whenever a date is known this has also been provided in the entry.
Classifying Mintchine’s artwork by subject is however, also not an easy task. How a painting such as “Irene and Angel” (MIN009) should be classified? Interior, genre, allegory? Is Notre Dame (MIN180) an interior, still life or landscape? The choice we have made is to simply group the artwork in general categories. To do so, we felt necessary to create a new “Angels” category in order to capture a subject so characteristic of Mintchine. The groups we have retained are, in order of appearance: “Portrait“, “Angel“, “Interior“, “Landscape” (countryside landscapes, then urban and seascapes) and “Still life“. The reader should not see these classifications as rigid, but rather as an initial association by theme which quite often with Mintchine can be extended to adjacent themes.
Finally, we have separated the artwork into oils and other medium. Other medium include (in order of appearance), mixed media, drawings and ceramics. The catalogue has been organized in responsive tables. By clicking on the image, the reader is able to access all details about the painting, including bibliography and past exhibitions. All entries have a unique reference number starting with MIN which can be used for future reference (exhibitions, auctions etc.).
